Key Principles
- Assume survivors exist within your teams, classrooms, and workspaces
- Take care to design courses and team projects with sensitivity (e.g., sensitive content notice, resource info in syllabus, etc.)
- Adopt a supportive stance
- “I’m sorry that happened to you.”
- “Thank you for telling me.”
- “How can I support you?”
- Actively listen
- Acknowledge harm and create space for sharing
- Recognize it’s okay to be unsure
- “I want to help; I’m just not sure how right now.”
- Recognize the autonomy of the impacted party
- Do not insist they report or make a formal complaint
- Respect their choice to seek or not seek help
- Do not solicit details or investigate
- Do not confront the accused
