Key Principles

  • Assume survivors exist within your teams, classrooms, and workspaces
    • Take care to design courses and team projects with sensitivity (e.g., sensitive content notice, resource info in syllabus, etc.)
  • Adopt a supportive stance
    • “I’m sorry that happened to you.”
    • “Thank you for telling me.”
    • “How can I support you?”
  • Actively listen
    • Acknowledge harm and create space for sharing
  • Recognize it’s okay to be unsure
    • “I want to help; I’m just not sure how right now.”
  • Recognize the autonomy of the impacted party
    • Do not insist they report or make a formal complaint
    • Respect their choice to seek or not seek help
    • Do not solicit details or investigate
    • Do not confront the accused
